Hamish Brown is a notable author, traveller, mountaineer and photographer, poet and anthologist with a unique knowledge of Morocco. He has received many awards, doctorates from St. Andrews University and the Open University, and is a fellow of The Royal Scottish Geographical Society.

Best known to walkers as the first person to have completed the Munros in a single self-propelled expedition. He was also the first to walk from John O’Groats to Lands End via Wales and Ireland visiting the highest summits of all four countries. The Ultimate Challenge, the Scottish coast to coast event, now called The Great Outdoor Challenge, was his creation and has been held annually for the past 45 years.

Hamish also inhabits another world as well, having spent over 50 extended visits to Morocco and the Atlas Mountains. He has a unique knowledge of both of the mountains and the cultural traditions of the Berber people. In 2006, he led a small party on a unique thousand mile end-to end trek of the Atlas, the story retold in the book ‘The Mountains Look on Marrakech’. This book was short-listed for the Boardman-Tasker Prize for Mountain Literature and serves as the basis for his talk.
